Description
Sambucus australasica is a shrub (to 4m tall) native to the east coast of Australia and occurs in or on the edges of rainforest. The ripe yellow fruit are edible but vary in taste, some being slightly sweet and others slightly bitter.
Sambucus australasica is a deciduous Shrub growing to 6 m (19ft 8in). The species is hermaphrodite (has both male and female organs) and is pollinated by Insects.
Suitable for: light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils. Suitable pH: acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It prefers moist soil. The plant can tolerates strong winds but not maritime exposure.
It can tolerate atmospheric pollution.
